"The Rape"

Italian Sculpture sketched by my daughter Chelsea Bednar
The Rape

It's an illusion
the softness of flesh, elegant line
of breasts and buttocks.

I marvel
at the sinew and curve
captured by the sculptor,

momentarily forget
the screams, tears, fears,
marble renders silent.

This is for "The Imaginary Garden of Real Toads - Artistic Interpretations with Margaret" (that's me, I am the host)

You are welcome to join in the fun - it starts at midnight (May 30) and goes through Saturday, (May 31) noon.   Please swing by with a poem of your own, or just to simply read the poetry!

Passion is wild - dangerous too -- a mother trying to interpret the sketch can't help but feel both longing and fear. How indeed to school anyone in that stuff? My mother studied at the Sorbonne just after the Second World War, and travelled through Italy with a friend, amazed at the lusty gusto of the Italians -- she says she would never have ventured there had she known what she was getting into, but she was fine and knowledge never helped her much ... The poetic sketch captures the frozen moment between exuberance and rape.

blueoran - Interesting. Yes, perhaps there is a twinge of the "mother protective" still in me, but as far as art not so much anymore. Chelsea started drawing nudes in her Junior year of high school - I was a bit "funny" about that but have totally changed my view on that. One of my favorite drawings is from her senior year - a nude and I have it hanging in my bedroom. "The Rape" poem is my fascination with the sheer beauty of it - the amazing talent that makes marble look like breathable flesh! - so taken with it I forget it depicts an awful tragedy…

Yes, the beauty of the art does cause one to almost forget. Beautifully depicted in both sketch and poem, Margaret.

Thank you for sharing your daughter's work and for inspiring with this challenge! :)

Great challenge, Margaret! If I didn't know the title of the art, I would not see the violence .. just yesterday I was thinking about a poem revolving around the journal I kept for five years ~~ from the day I brought my mother to live with me until the day she died in my arms.

It is strange to think that something brutal can be turned into a beautiful piece of art.

I think you have accurately summed up the dichotomy between art and the reality it represents. How better to do that than with a scene of rape transformed into art?

Margaret, again I am awed by your daughter's talents. Yes stone does seem to dull the passion and pain.
Remember too that sculpting was a man's world back then. Men with a mentality I call hill billy, such as "a girl is a virgin if she can run faster than her brother."
Too bad. But the resulting art has been fantastic. You wrote from a being objective viewpoint, you did well.

Some Art is meant to evoke the moment, and your poem is doing the same thing. What a gift to split that difference with us and ask us to see t too. excellent

Allusion brings up illusion here--and you bring up this dichotomy between the real and art so well--I think this is also a dichotomy between myth and the real as well--as the rapes in myth typically involve Gods! Of course, women pretty low on the totem pole. Thanks, Margaret. k.

My mistake! It should be illusion.

Margaret, this was a challenging poem. On the one hand, Chelsea's art is always a thrill, but on the other hand, when I realized it was a scene of a rape, I was chilled. I am haunted by the idea of rape, that is was and is so easily conjured by men and so easily visited upon women, especially in that era. So, mixed feelings about the subject, but your poem was wonderful, especially the last line.

lots of talent in your veins, Margaret :) ~

Margaret, First let me say that I love your new profile pic--so attractive. Your daughter has certainly inherited your artistic talent-her drawing is very good. Your poetry, as always, is excellent. The wording in the last verse is exceptionally well done. Mickie :)
